TENS for Pregnancy
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. TENS
has successfully been used for many years by pregnant women and
professional midwives worldwide to treat labour pain; it is especially
common in the UK. It is typically used only after the 37th week
of pregnancy.
TENS works in two ways:
* Stimulation is used to boost naturally produced endorphins to
help in combating pain by triggering the body's response to pain.
*
Stimulation triggers faster nerve fibres than pain signals, thus
effectively blocking the pain signal from reaching the brain
Due to the lack of widespread availability and training available
for the application of TENS for labour and delivery, I sourced
out my own TENS unit during my wife's pregnancy. The unit worked
with great success and more importantly, it was drug free!
Understanding that this would be a daunting task for those without
direct access, I decided to find a way to provide simple access
to both the TENS units and personalized training on the most effective
way to implement it during labour to aid in pain relief. I can
provide in-home training for parents and couples most evenings
and weekends, along with delivering a ready to use TENS unit.
